Map layers
Six layers on one map. Each page says what the layer shows, how to read it, how fine it is, how old it is and where it is weak.
- TemperatureSea surface temperature mapHow warm the top of the ocean is, drawn as colour. Tap the water and Gannet View also measures the nearest temperature break: how sharp it is, how far away, and which side is warmer.
- CurrentsOcean currents mapWhich way the surface water is moving and how fast, drawn as streaks coloured by temperature. Tap anywhere for speed and direction in your own units.
- EddiesOcean eddy map (sea level)Satellites measure the height of the sea surface. Highs and lows in that height mark the big, slowly turning eddies that wander through the ocean for weeks.
- ChlorophyllChlorophyll mapChlorophyll is the green pigment of microscopic plant life. From space it shows where the water is green and where it is blue, which is the base of the marine food chain.
- ClarityWater clarity mapHow far down you could see. Clarity is drawn as the depth at which a white disc would disappear, from satellite measurements of the colour of the sea.
- SeabedSeabed and bathymetry mapThe bottom, drawn as shaded relief with depth lines. The shelf edge, canyons, ledges and reefs stand out, and the depth under any point is a tap away.
